I started eating at Lula a million years ago - way back in 2004 - and I have never fully recovered. Lula changed how I view food and people forever. And I keep coming back for more.
Now that I've had the chance to eat all over the world, I often compare my meals to Lula. I'll think, "Wow, that was really delicious - but was it as great as Lula?" More often than not, the answer is "Not quite."
At some point - I can't remember exactly when - I started making creatures at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. They brought me happiness, and they needed a home, so I began leaving one behind for whoever was serving at Lula when I came in to eat. It was my small way of sharing joy in a place that had given me so much of it. Lula was kind enough to embrace my need to give them creatures, and soon the creatures moved up to the hostess area. They were, of course, incredibly excited to be around more people. Now they greet guests at the door, sit at diners' tables, and watch all the great things coming out of the kitchen. Over time, the creature population has multiplied - and they've become, like some diners… regulars. They bring joy to a place that encourages happiness, as Lula always has for me - and hopefully will for you too.
